The river road

Everything in Hunt orbits the water. The Hunt Store — part general store, part grill, part front porch for the whole community — is the natural first stop. From there, FM 1340 follows the North Fork west through crossing after crossing: cypress, limestone bluffs, and swimming holes that look painted.

Hunt is Texas's summer-camp heartland — camps have shaped generations of Texas kids on these banks for a century, and seasonal traditions like Crider's outdoor rodeo and dance hall (summer Saturdays since 1925) carry the culture.

Be a good guest of the river: crossings and low-water bridges demand respect, and conditions change fast in the headwaters. Check live river levels — the Hunt gauge is the valley's early-warning bellwether — and never drive through water over a crossing.

Why people choose Hunt

This is legacy-property country: river frontage, family compounds, and small ranches that stay in families for generations. Buyers here are buying the water, the trees, and the quiet — and paying the valley's premium to get them.

Eyes-open river ownership

After the 2025 floods, Hunt buyers rightly ask harder questions — and sellers with well-documented properties come out ahead. FEMA zones, elevation, structure siting, and insurance are the conversation, not the afterthought. Our floodplain guide covers what to ask; this community's recovery and resilience are part of its story now, told with pride.

Practical notes

Hunt is unincorporated — county road maintenance, well and septic on most properties, and tiny Hunt ISD serving the community. Internet options have improved but verify service address-by-address before you commit.
